3、ave the map to Silver.”“It was useless by then,” the doctor said. “There was no buried treasure. Ben Gunn had it. My plan was to get Long John Silver and his men away from the stockade(木寨). We could then get some stores from it.”When we got back to the cave, the squire was waiting for us.“Three of t
4、he mutineers(反叛者) got away,” the doctor told him. “But if we hurry, we can get to the boat before them. They ran back to the stockade on the other side of the island. We are nearer to the boat than they are.”I went into the cave. The captain was lying inside it next to the treasurea pile of gold coi
5、ns.“Hello, Jim,” he said. “I am pleased to see you. But I dont think you or I will be going to see again.”That night, the captain died. We carried the treasure down to the boat. We lit a fire on the shore and had a fine meal together. We were not afraid of the three mutineers. We had pistols(手槍). Th
6、ey had none. There were more of us than of them.The next morning, we went in the boat towards the Hispaniola. We didnt care about the three men. On cold winter nights he lay at the Judges feet in front of the warm library fire. He was kingking over everything, crawled(爬行的), walke
14、d, or flew at Judge Millers place, including humans.Buck was this kind of dog in the autumn of 1897, when the discovery of gold in the Klondike pulled men from all over the world into the frozen North. But Buck did not read the newspapers. He did not know that Manuel, one of gardeners helpers, was n
15、ot to be trusted. Manuel loved to gamble(賭博). He believed he could win but he was doomed to failure.On the night of Manuels betrayal(背叛), no one saw him and Buck went off through the fields. To be sure, it was unwanted, but Buck had learned to trust men he knew.However, when the ends of the rope were placed in the strangers hands, he barked.
