、七、詞句猜測 詞義猜測題(2017江蘇,B)Before birth, babies can tell the difference between loud sounds and voices. They can even distinguish their mothers voice from that of a female stranger. But when it comes to embryonic learning(胎教),birds could rule the roost. As recently reported in The Auk:Ornithological Advances

、,some mother birds may teach their young to sing even before they hatch(孵化)New-born chicks can then imitate their moms call within a few days of entering the world. This educational method was first observed in 2012 by Sonia Kleindorfer,a biologist at Flinders University in South Australia, and her co

、lleagues.Female Australian superb fairy wrens were found to repeat one sound over and over again while hatching their eggs. When the eggs were hatched, the baby birds made the similar chirp to their mothersa sound that served as their regular “feed me!” call.To find out if the special quality was more

、 widespread in birds, the researchers sought the red-backed fairy wren, another species of Australian songbird.First they collected sound data from 67 nests in four sites in Queensland before and after hatching. Then they identified begging calls by analyzing the order and number of notes.A computer an

、alysis blindly compared calls produced by mothers and chicks, ranking them by similarity. It turns out that baby red-backed fairy wrens also emerge chirping like their moms. And the more frequently mothers had called to their eggs, the more similar were the babies begging calls. In addition, the team set

、up a separate experiment that suggested that the baby birds that most closely imitated their moms voice were rewarded with the most food. This observation hints that effective embryonic learning could signal neurological(神經系統(tǒng)的) strengths of children to parents. An evolutionary inference can then be dr

、awn.“As a parent,do you invest in quality children,or do you invest in children that are in need?” Kleindorfer asks.“Our results suggest that they might be going for quality.”語篇解讀這是一篇科普類的說明文。文章講述了澳大利亞的一位生物學家通過研究發(fā)現,鳥兒在孵化時會進行胎教,幼鳥會用胎教時學會的鳥叫聲來引起鳥媽媽的關注。鳥兒在胎教方面比人類更出色。58The underlined phrase in Paragraph

、1 means “ ”Abe the worst Bbe the bestCbe just as bad Dbe just as good答案B解析詞義猜測題。畫線部分前面的語境說,嬰兒在出生之前就能分辨很大的聲響與人的嗓音(tell the difference between loud sounds and voices);畫線部分后面的語境說,有些鳥媽媽在鳥兒被孵化出來之前,就可能教它們啼叫(teach their young to sing)。通過對比畫線部分的前后我們發(fā)現,這里說的是與人類相比,鳥媽媽在胎教方面表現得最好(be the best),因此選B。59What are Kl

、eindorfers findings based on?ASimilarities between the calls of moms and chicks.BThe observation of fairy wrens across Australia.CThe data collected from Queenslands locals.DControlled experiments on wrens and other birds.答案A解析細節(jié)理解題。根據第三段的研究過程和第四段的研究結果可知,他的發(fā)現基于A項(鳥媽媽與幼鳥叫聲的相似之處)。60Embryonic learning

、helps mother birds to identify the baby birds which .Acan receive quality signalsBare in need of trainingCfit the environment betterDmake the loudest call答案C解析推理判斷題。文章最后兩段說,研究結果發(fā)現,叫聲與鳥媽媽的聲音很接近的幼鳥得到的食物最多(the baby birds that most closely imitated their moms voice were rewarded with the most food),這表明,

、有效的胎教能夠把孩子神經系統(tǒng)的優(yōu)點發(fā)信號給母親(signal neurological strengths of children to parents)。

、e word “.” refers to/probably means .2The underlined word “.” could best be replaced by .3What do you think the expression “.” stands for?4By saying “.” we mean .5“.” as used in the passage can best be defined as .6Which of the following words can take the place of the word “.”?7What does the underl

、ined word/phrase “.” in Paragraph.mean?8The underlined word “.” is closest in meaning to .二、解題技巧巧用線索猜詞義1根據定義、釋義或同位語進行猜測有些文章,特別是科技說明文,作者通常會對一些關鍵詞或專業(yè)術語下定義,通過閱讀定義和解釋部分,考生便可理解該詞或短語的意思。有時,需要猜測的單詞或短語后面會緊跟一個同位語,作為對前面的詞或短語的解釋說明。有時,文章會用冒號、破折號、括號等對某個詞或短語加以解釋說明。例如:(2018江蘇,B)When Berlin restaurant customers ate

、 in darkness, they couldnt tell how much theyd had:those given extra-large shares ate more than everyone else, but were none the wiserthey didnt feel fuller, and they were just as ready for dessert.試題:The underlined phrase “none the wiser” in Paragraph 3 most probably implies that the customers were .A

、not aware of eating more than usualBnot willing to share food with othersCnot conscious of the food qualityDnot fond of the food provided分析:所猜測短語none the wiser后面出現了破折號來進行解釋說明,我們可推知那些被給以大份飯菜的食客比其他人吃得多,但他們沒覺得更飽,這說明在黑暗的就餐環(huán)境下,食客并不清楚自己多吃了多少,所以此處的none the wiser是“不清楚,不知道”之意。2根據構詞法進行猜測英語中通過詞根加詞綴或兩個單詞合成的方式可以

、構成新詞。因此,掌握了一定的構詞知識,再結合上下文語境,也可以快速猜測詞義。例如:A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness,or worry.分析:根據構詞法知識我們可知,un-為否定前綴,-ness為名詞后綴,easy(舒適)為詞根。因此,我們可知uneasiness為“不安;擔憂”之意。3根據因果關系進行猜測在閱讀理解文章的句子或段落中,若兩個事物或兩種現象之間構成因果關系,這時我們可以根據這種因果邏輯關系推斷詞或短語的含義。表示因果關系的標志詞有because,so,thus,therefore,a

、s a result of,since,so that,so/such.that.等。例如:My son could not follow the teachers directions,he told me,and thus,Scola was disrupting the class.Didnt he know my son did not speak English yet?試題:What does the underlined word “disrupting” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?ABreaking. BFollowing.CAttending.

、 DDisturbing.分析:畫線單詞所在的句子出現了因果關系標志詞thus,由前面的原因“我兒子聽不懂老師的指示”可以推知,“因此,我兒子Scola干擾了課堂秩序”,故選D項。其余三項都不符合這一因果邏輯關系。4根據同義或近義關系進行猜測在畫線單詞或短語前后有時會出現與之同義或近義的詞語或結構,它往往暗示了該詞或該短語的含義,這時可從熟悉的詞語中推知生詞或短語的含義。常見的表示相同或相近意義的詞和短語有and,or,like,as well, similarly, too, also, either等。例如:The fine selection of the major works was don

、e in close collaboration(合作) with the Museo Nacional Reina Sofia in Madrid,Spain, and with contributions from other institutions like the Salvador Dali Museum in St.Petersburg,Florida.試題:What does the word “contributions” in the last paragraph refer to?AArtworks. BProjects.CDonations. DDocuments.分析:畫

、線單詞contributions前出現了and,可利用同義或近義關系進行猜測。and前面提到了the fine selection of the major works (精選的重要作品),后面說contributions來自其他機構,由并列關系可以推斷出contributions應該屬于works的范疇。故選A項。5根據反義,轉折和對比關系進行猜測有些需要猜測詞義的詞或短語前后會出現表示轉折或對比的詞語,運用這些詞語也可以幫助猜測詞義。能體現轉折、對比關系的詞匯很多,常見的有but,yet,however,while,unlike,instead (of),on the other hand

、,rather than,on the contrary等。例如:In the evening, rides are usually at a more relaxed and unhurried pace, with golden light streaming across the grassy delta and the animals coming out to eat and drink.Sedate though they are, rides at this time of day are still very impressive.試題:What does the underline

、d word “sedate” probably mean?AWild and romantic.BSlow and peaceful.CHungry and thirsty.DActive and excited.分析:畫線詞語所在句子的句意為“雖然它們 ,但是在一天的這個時候騎馬觀賞仍然令人印象非常深刻”。由though可知前后兩句是轉折關系,再結合前一句中提到的“at a more relaxed and unhurried pace”可知,應選B項,sedate意為“慢悠悠的,安靜的”。6根據上下文進行猜測有些詞義猜測題找不到以上標志線索,這時可以利用上下文提供的情景和線索進行合乎邏輯

、的綜合分析,進而推測詞義,這也是近幾年來高考考查的熱點。例如:(2016全國,C)There are also varieties developed to suit specific local conditions. One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but youll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it,so its a pipe dream for most apple lovers who fall fo

、r it.試題:What does the underlined phrase “a pipe dream” in Paragraph 3 mean?AA practical idea. BA vain hope.CA brilliant plan. 25、ans Reinette是很好的品種,但是對各項條件的要求很高,因此大多數喜歡它的人種植它的希望會落空。故選擇B項。A(2018黑龍江齊齊哈爾一模)83-year-old Antonio Vicente has spent the last four decades of his life fighting against the trend. As Brazilian landowners 9cut down rainforests to make room for 1profitable plantations(種植園) and cattle grounds,he struggled to
