課時(shí)達(dá)標(biāo)(十三) Unit 3 The Million Pound Bank Note 閱讀理解A課標(biāo)話題人與社會(huì)·社會(huì)熱點(diǎn)問題體裁記敘文詞 數(shù) 304難度 (2019·重慶一中月考)As years went by, I realised that one of the biggest problems of these adults was worry. A large majority of my students were businessmen, executives, salesmen, engineers, accountants: a cross section of all the trades and professionsand most of them had problems! There were women in the classesbusiness women and housewives. They, too, had problems! Clearly, what I needed was a textbook on how to conquer worryso again I tried to find one.I went to New Yorks great public library at Fifth Avenue and Fortysecond Street and discovered to my astonishment that this library had only twentytwo books listed under the title WORRY. I also noticed, to my amusement, that it had one hundred and eightynine books listed under WORMS. Almost nine times as many books about worms as about worry! Surprising, isnt it? Since worry is one of the biggest problems facing mankind, you would think, wouldnt you, that every high school and college in the land would give a course on “How to Stop Worrying”?Yet, if there is even one course on that subject in any college in the land, I have never heard of it. No wonder David Seabury said in his book How to Worry Successfully:“We grow up with as little preparation for the pressures of experience as a bookworm asked to do a ballet(芭蕾舞)”The result? More than half of our hospital beds are occupied by people with nervous and emotional troubles.I looked over those twentytwo books on worry, reposing(靠) on the shelves of the New York Public Library. In addition, I purchased all the books on worry I could find; yet I couldnt discover even one that I could use as a text in my course for adults. So I decided to write one by myself. 1What made the writer realise one of the adults biggest problems? It shows Hardys amazing power of describing nature as symbolic background for his characters, an organic part of the action of his story. This was the earliest of what he called his novels of character and environment, which included The Return of the Native, Tess of the dUrbervilles, his masterpiece, and Jude the Obscure. Not until he was fiftyeight years old was his first collection of poems published, and he was sixtyfour when the first part of his drama The Dynastssurprised the literary world. 5How did Thomas Hardy benefit from his architectural career?AHe could practice writing while working.BHe made a lot of money to support his writing.CHe found material for his novels and poems.DHe applied architectural knowledge in his novels. 6What is Thomas Hardys Under the Greenwood Tree considered to be?AOne of his masterworks.BHis first popular success.CHis best novel in perfection of art.DOne of his best collections of poems. 7Which of the following is one of Thomas Hardys novels of character and environment?ADesperate Remedies.BA Pair of Blue Eyes.CTess of the dUrbervilles.DThe Dynasts. 根據(jù)第四段第三句可知,Tess of the dUrbervilles是有關(guān)性格和環(huán)境的小說,故選C項(xiàng)。8What type of writing is this text?AA novelBA biography.CA book reviewDA news report. More than a century after the Titanic sank, few new stories are discovered about the accident.
