Unit 3 Life in the future閱讀理解組塊專練練速度(限時:30分鐘). AWhat will man be like in the future in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time. Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is relatively a short period of time, so we may assume that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain's capacity. As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change to the head, in particular, the forehead will grow larger. Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that man's eyes will grow stronger. On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life. But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald (光禿的)Perhaps all these give the impression that in the future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may well be true. All the same, in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own. 1The passage mainly tells us that _.Aman's life will be different in the futureBfuture man will look quite different from usCman is growing taller and uglier as time passesDman's organs' functions will be on the wane (衰退)解析:選B主旨大意題。 2The change in man's size of forehead is probably because _.Ahe/she makes use only 20% of the brain's capacityBhis/her brain has grown larger over the past centuriesCthe other 80% of his/her brain will grow in due timeDhe/she will use his brain more and more as time goes on解析:選D細節(jié)理解題。 3It is implied that _.Ahuman beings will become less attractive in the futureBless use of a bodily organ may lead to its degenerationChuman beings hope for a change in the future lifeDfuture life is always predictable解析:選B推理判斷題。 BWhat will people die of 100 years from now? If you think that is a simple question, you have not been paying attention to the revolution that is taking place in biotechnology. With the help of new medicine, the human body will last a very long time. Death will come mainly from accidents, murder and war. Today's leading killers, such as heart disease, cancer, and aging itself, will become distant memories. In discussion of technological changes, the Internet gets most of the attention these days. But the change in medicine can be the real technological event of our times. How long can humans live? Human brains were known to decide the final death. Cells are the basic units of all living things, and until recently, scientists were sure that the life of cells could not go much beyond 120 years because the basic materials of cells, such as those of brain cells, would not last forever. But the upper limits will be broken by new medicine. Sometime between 2050 and 2100, medicine will have advanced to the point at which every 10 years or so, people will be able to take medicine to repair their organs. The medicine, made up of the basic building materials of life, will build new brain cells, heart cells, and so on in much the same way our bodies make new skin cells to take the place of old ones. It is exciting to imagine that the advance in technology may be changing the most basic condition of human existence, but many technical problems still must be cleared up on the way to this wonderful future. 4According to the passage, human death is now mainly caused by _. Adiseases and agingBaccidents and war Caccidents and agingDheart disease and war解析:選A細節(jié)理解題。根據第一段最后一句“Today's leading killers, such as heart disease, cancer, and aging itself, will become distant memories.”可知選A。5In the author's opinion, today's most important advance in technology lies in _. B。6Humans may live longer in the future because _.Aheart disease will be far away from usBhuman brains can decide the final deathCthe basic materials of cells will last foreverDhuman organs can be repaired by new medicine解析:選D細節(jié)理解題。根據第二段“people will be able to take medicine to repair their organs”可知選D。7We can infer from the passage that _.Ahuman life will not last more than 120 years in the futureBhumans have to take medicine to build new skin cells nowCmany things have to be done before humans can have a longer lifeDwe have already solved the technical problems in building new cells解析:選C推理判斷題。 C。CI have lived in America's countryside for nine years, first in Michigan, where I was getting my university degree; then in central Illinois; and now in Indiana, where I am a university teacher. There were a few things I enjoyed complaining (抱怨) about in my living area. I'm a vegetarian (素食者), so there's nowhere to go out for a nice dinner without taking a 50mile drive. I'm black, so there's nowhere to get my hair done without another 50mile drive.I repeated these complaints to my parents and my friends. Sometimes it seemed like complaints were the common language in my circle. We all were dissatisfied with something. Back in Illinois, my friends complained about the train to Chicago and how it's never on time; my friends in bigger cities complained about the expensive rent and strange smells on the subway.Complaining allows us to accept the imperfect without having to take action. We all have great ideas about what life would be like if only we had this, or did that, or lived there. Perhaps complaining helps bridge the large space between these perfect selves and reality. There's also this: I really didn't want to change most of the things I complained about. Complaining was helpful on those days when happiness required too much energy. But it also made me lose sight of something. I was born and grew up in Nebraska and have lived most of my life in one of the plains states. When I went to the coasts, I was surprised by how unattractive bigcity living can be.Complaining may offer relief, but so does acceptance. There is no perfect place. There is no perfect life. There will always be something to complain about. By focusing on (關注) my complaints, I risked missing out on important moments of happiness. Now, I look up into the night sky and see all the stars. And I know that I have nothing to complain about. 8After complaining, the author probably_.Ahad a deeper understanding of realityBtried to make herself more perfectCgot sadder about her situationDremained unchanged解析:選D推理判斷題。根據第三段中的“Complaining allows us to accept the imperfect without having to take action.”和第四段中的“I really didn't want to change most of the things I complained about”可推測,作者抱怨過后基本不作出任何改變。9What does the underlined word “something” in Paragraph 4 refer to?AThe fact that the author liked the countryside.BThe difference between small and big cities.CThe difficulty in finding happiness.DThe purpose of the author's life. 畫線詞something指的是后面的兩句“I was born and grew up in Nebraska and have lived most of my life in one of the plains states. When I went to the coasts, I was surprised by how unattractive bigcity living can be.” 10The author writes the text mainly to _.Amake her complaintsBtell us to stop complainingCcompare different lifestylesDtell us life is the same anywhere解析:選B寫作目的題。根據最后一段特別是最后一句“And I know that I have nothing to complain about.” .閱讀七選五(2019·嘉興調研)Critical (批判的) thinking is the art of using reason to analyze ideas and dig deeper to get to our true potential. It doesn't mean you're thinking harder or longer. _1_ Here are some tips and ideas to help you build a foundation for critical thinking.Question your assumptions. We make a lot of assumptions about almost everything. It's how our brain processes certain pieces of information, and how we get along in everyday life. You could say they are the foundation of our critical framework. _2_ Then the whole foundation needs to be rebuilt, from the bottom up.Don't take information on authority until you've investigated it yourself. Instead of doublechecking everything anyone says, we tend to label information as either coming from a trustworthy or not trustworthy source. This keeps us from doublechecking every piece of information that comes our way, saving time and energy. But it also keeps us from getting to the bottom of things we think of as coming from a trustworthy source, even when they don't. _3_Put yourself in other people's shoes. Empathy can also help you develop your critical thinking skills. _4_ You may find that a little understanding facilitates a deeper insight into other people and their behavior. The deeper your insight is into yourself and others, the wiser your decisions will be. _5_ There is no way to learn better than learning from your friends. If you only want to be a big fish swimming in the little pond just because your ego (自我價值感) feels good, keep this part. If you are wondering about how to develop critical skills, make friends with smart people and throw away your ego.AActually, it's about thinking better.BSurround yourself with people smarter than you.CBe someone that people know that they can count on.DYou should not judge others until you fully understand their situation.EBut what if they turned out to be wrong, or at least not entirely truthful?FThe reason is that understanding does not always go with the right action.GSo what is published in a magazine or online doesn't mean it's necessarily true.1選A由上文“It doesn't mean you're thinking harder or longer.” 2選E根據下文中的“Then the whole foundation needs to be rebuilt, from the bottom up.” 3選G由上文中的“But it also keeps us from getting to the bottom of things we think of as coming from a trustworthy source, even when they don't.” 4選D根據上文中的“Put yourself in other people's shoes.”,以及此處與下文中的“The deeper your insight is into yourself and others, the wiser your decisions will be.” 7
