From New Zealand to New York, the world eagerly celebrated the New Year, hoping for a better future after a year of diseases, struggles and disasters. The islands of Samoa mid Tokelau in the Pacific Ocean and places located near the International Date Line mark the dawn of the New Year. As celebrations spread westward, fireworks lit up the night sky in towns and cities around the world, as celebrators partied on the streets. In some parts of the world, the New Years celebrations were, lets say, rather unusual. In many European countries as well as in Coney Island, New York, swimmers braved freezing water temperatures for a dip in the ocean or lake on January 1. In Rome, Italy, divers jumped off the 59foothigh Cavour bridge into the Tiber River. Londoners rang in the New Year with a massive fireworks display with dozens of rockets lighting up the night sky. The Scots celebration of New Year is also called “Hogmanay”. A torchlight procession led by men dressed as Vikings kicks off four days of Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh, Scotland. The procession ends with the burning of a Viking long ship. Hogmanay is the Scottish word for the last day of the year. Street festivals are held on each day culminating in a fireworks display.【解題導(dǎo)語】這是一篇說明文。 文章主要介紹的是關(guān)于世界各地歡度新年的文化趣事。36We can learn that people in the capital of Great Britain will celebrate the New Year by _Awatching fireworksBjumping into waterCjumping off bridgesDpartying on streetsA解析: 細節(jié)理解題。 根據(jù)文章第三段的第四句Londoners rang in the New Year with a massive fireworks display with dozens of rockets lighting up the night sky. 倫敦人是通過觀看焰火的方式過新年的。 故選A。37The author mentioned the celebration called “Hogmanay” to clarify further that _Athe Scots are VikingsBthe Scottish words are traditionalCthe display ends with a shipDthe celebrations are variedD解析: 推理判斷題。 根據(jù)文章第三段的倒數(shù)第四句A torchlight procession led by men dressed as Vikings kicks off four days of Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh, Scotland. 及本段內(nèi)容可知各地的慶祝新年的方式是不一樣的。 故選D。BMy wife and I have always been friendly with the clerks at the local convenience store. I dont think many people appreciate what a difficult job these folks have. They work for a little over minimum wage and I often wonder how they make ends meet. One of the clerks, Charlie, was always wearing his glasses but he didnt one day. I asked him about it and he said theyd been out of order and that he couldnt afford a new pair. His family needed money. It was obvious that he was having a difficult time.We wanted to help him, so we turned to our own eye doctor for assistance with a plan. We had his secretary contact him, asking him to come in for an eye exam for free. We told the doctor to let him order whatever glasses he wanted and that we would pay for them. Although Charlie questioned what was going on, the doctor just told him that someone had offered the money for his new glasses. When we went in to pay the bill, the doctor told us he was so touched by our idea that he waived the exam fee and only charged us for half the price of the glasses! It was so wonderful to see Charlie in his new glasses and he enjoyed telling all the regular customers how the gift came about. Im sure that upon hearing his story, ideas of kindness may have emerged in the minds of many.【解題導(dǎo)語】本文是一個關(guān)于愛的故事。 作者夫婦發(fā)現(xiàn)百貨店的員工Charlie的眼鏡壞了, 因為沒錢而無法配眼鏡, 作者夫婦悄悄為他配上了新眼鏡, 這種愛感動了眼科醫(yī)生,而他也在傳播著這份愛。 送人玫瑰, 手有余香。38Why didnt the clerk Charlie wear glasses one day?AIt was very warm and fine.BHis old glasses were broken.CHis glasses were missing.DHe forgot to wear his glasses.B解析: 細節(jié)理解題。 根據(jù)題干關(guān)鍵詞the clerk Charlie wear glasses one day找到文章第二段中的he said theyd been out of order and that he couldnt afford a new pair, 與B項對應(yīng)。 故選B。39From the passage, we can infer that _ACharlie was a young man with skillsBCharlie knew who paid the money for the new glassesCCharlie didnt support his family with enough moneyDCharlie entirely accepted the money for the new glassesC解析: 推理判斷題。 根據(jù)文章第二段的最后兩句His family needed money. Without idioms English would lose much of its variety and humor both in speech and writing while using it properly. With idioms people will not only strengthen the ability to express all sorts of ideas but also the ability to appreciate culture, which then improves the linguistic ability. English idioms relate so closely to English culture that they are like a drop in the ocean of English culture and reflect the significance of English culture throughout history.Customs are a kind of social phenomenon. They are not the product of individuals but that of the collective in the society, which are affected by politics, economy, religion, literary art and so on and then affect those things in reverse. English idioms are thus greatly influenced by English customs, which concern almost every respect of social life. As a special part of culture, language, especially idioms, inevitably reflects the customs of the nationality. There is no exception to English idioms. In the old days the written language (novels, poems, plays and the Bible) was the source on which idioms were based. This was the case up until World War . After the war new mediums had appeared in Englishspeaking society, and there was a channel for the American way of life and the popular culture of the US. TV, movies and nowadays the interactive medium have changed the English language more to the American English direction. How then does American English differ from British English in the use of idioms? There are no radical differences in actual use. The main differences are in the situations where idiomatic expressions are used. There have been many studies recently on this subject. American English adopts and creates new idioms at a much faster rate compared to British English. Also the idioms of American English origin seem to spread faster and further. After it has first been established in the US., an American idiom may soon be found in other variants (變體)and dialects of English. Nowadays new British idioms seem to stay on the British Isles and are rarely encountered in the US. British idioms are in fact more familiar to other Europeans or to the people of the British Commonwealth than to Americans, even though the language is same. The future of idiomatic expressions in the English language seems certain. They are more and more based on American English. This development will continue through new mediums like the Internet and interactive mediums. It is hard to say what this will do to idioms and what kind of new idioms are created. This will be an interesting development to follow, and by no means does it lessen the humor, variety and color of English language.【解題導(dǎo)語】文章主要介紹了英語習(xí)語的發(fā)展。41According to the passage, we can know that_Aidioms are usually not based on logical and grammatical rulesBthe English language has more idioms than any other languagesCnowadays British English creates more new idioms than American EnglishDBritish idioms are more reliable than American idiomsA解析: 細節(jié)理解題。 根據(jù)第一段中的“that frequently defy(蔑視)logical and grammatical rules”可知, 習(xí)語通常不遵循邏輯和語法規(guī)則, 故A項正確。42According to the passage, original idioms mainly come from_Athe written languageBnew mediumsCthe spoken languageDspeakers creationsA解析: 細節(jié)理解題。 根據(jù)第三段第一句“In the old days the written language(novels, poems, plays and the Bible)was the source on which idioms were based.”可知, 書面語是最初的習(xí)語的來源。 故A項正確。43When a new idiom is created in America, it will soon_Abe used all over the worldBbe laughed at by British peopleCbe used in other variants of English as wellDbe used only in the United StatesC解析: 細節(jié)理解題。 根據(jù)最后一段中的“Also the idioms of.other variants(變體)and dialects of English.”可知, 美國習(xí)語的傳播速度非???, 很快就能被用到其他英語的變體中, 故C項正確。44The future of idiomatic expressions in the English language may mainly rely on_AAmerican EnglishBBritish EnglishCthe old idiomsDsocial customsA解析: 細節(jié)理解題。 根據(jù)最后一段中的“The future of idiomatic expressions in the English language seems certain. On Friday night a tornado swept through a town north of us called Barrie, killing dozens of people and doing millions of dollars worth of damage. Sunday night, as I was coming home, I stopped the car when I got to Barrie. I got out on the side of the highway and looked around. It was a mess. Everywhere I looked there were smashed houses and cars turned upside down. That same night Bob Templeton was driving down the same highway. He stopped to look at the disaster just as I had; only his thoughts were different than my own. Bob was the vicepresident of Telemedia Communications, which owns a string of radio stations in Ontario and Quebec. He thought there must be something we could do for these people with the radio stations they had. The following night I was doing another seminar in Toronto. Bob Templeton and Bob Johnson, another vicepresident from Telemedia, came in and stood in the back of the room. They shared their conviction (信念) that there had to be something they could do for the people in Barrie. After the seminar we went back to Bobs office. He was now committed (堅定的) to the idea of helping the people who had been caught in the tornado. The following Friday he called all the executives (執(zhí)行委員會) at Telemedia into his office. At the top of a flip chart (海報) he wrote three 3s. He said to his executives, “How would you like to raise 3 million dollars 3 days from now in just 3 hours and give the money to the people in Barrie?” There was nothing but silence in the room. Finally someone said, “Templeton, youre crazy. There is no way we could do that.” Bob said, “Wait a minute. I didnt ask you if we could or even if we should. I just asked you if youd like to.” They all said, “Sure wed like to.” He then drew a large T underneath the 333. On one side he wrote, “Why we cant.” On the other side he wrote, “How we can.” “Im going to put a big X on the Why we cant side. Were not going to spend any time on the ideas of why we cant. Thats of no value. On the other side were going to write down every idea that we can come up with on how we can. Were not going to leave the room until we figure it out.” There was silence again. Finally, someone said, “We could do a radio show across Canada.” Bob said, “Thats a great idea, ” and wrote it down. Before he had it written, someone said, “You cant do a radio show across Canada. We dont have radio stations across Canada.” That was a pretty valid (有效的) objection. They only had stations in Ontario and Quebec.Templeton replied, “Thats_why_we_can._That_stays” But this was a real strong objection because radio stations are not very compatible (和諧相處的). They usually dont work together. They are very cutthroat. They fight each other. To get them to work together would be virtually impossible according to the standard way of thinking. All of a sudden someone said, “We could get Harvey Kirk and Lloyd Robertson, the biggest names in Canadian broadcasting, to anchor (主持) the show.”(That would be like getting Tom Brokaw and Sam Donaldson to anchor the show. They are anchors on national TV. They are not going to go on radio.) At that point, it was absolutely amazing how fast and furious the creative ideas began to flow. That was on a Friday. The following Tuesday they had a radiothon (廣播募捐). They had fifty radio stations all a
