However, many people believe that our progress depends on two different aspects of science. The first aspect is the application of the machines, products and systems of knowledge that scientists and technologists develop.  The second is the application of the special methods of thought and action that scientists use in their work.      What are these special methods of thinking and acting? First of all, it seems that a successful scientist is curious - he wants to find out how and why the universe works. He usually pays attention to problems which he notices have no satisfying explanation, and looks for relationships even if the data available seem to be unconnected. Moreover, he thinks he can improve the existing conditions and enjoys trying to solve the problems which this involves.     He is a good observer, accurate, patient and objective(客觀的) and uses the facts he observes to the fullest. For example, trained observers obtain a very large amount of information about a star mainly from the accurate analysis of the simple lines that appear in a spectrum(光譜).     He does not accept statements which are not based on the most complete evidence available. He rejects authority as the only basis for truth. Scientists always check statements and make experiments carefully and objectively.     Furthermore, he does not readily accept his own idea, since he knows that man is the least reliable of scientific instruments and that a number of factors tend to disturb objective investigation.     Lastly, he is full of imagination since he often has to look for relationships in data which are not only complex but also frequently incomplete. Furthermore, he needs imagination if he wants to guess how processes work and how events take place.     These seem to be some of the ways in which a successful scientist or technologist thinks and acts.10. Many people believe that science helps society to progress through_ A. knowledge only.B. more than one aspect.   C. technology only.   D. the use of machines. 11. Which of the following statements about a curious scientist is TRUE?A. He doesnt find confidence and pleasure in work.B. He is interested in problems that are explained.C. He makes efforts to investigate potential connections.D. He looks for new ways of acting. 12. According to the passage, a successful scientist would NOT_.A. easily believe in unchecked statements.B. easily criticize others' research work.   C. always use his imagination in work.   D. always use evidence from observation. 13. Which word can be used to describe the data that a good scientist uses?A. complete B. objective C. complicated D. accurate14. What does the passage mainly discuss?   A. Application of technology.   B. Progress in modem society.   C. Scientists' ways of thinking and acting.   D. How to become a successful scientist.10. B。從第二段中many people believe that our progress depends on two different aspects of science.可知科學在兩個方面推動社會進步。11. C。D選項的意思是“他總是尋求行動的新方法”,文中沒有提及。A應是find confidence and pleasure. D應是that are unexplained12. A。 AIn 1939 two brothers, Mac and Dick McDonald, started a drive-in restaurant in San Bernadino, California. They carefully chose a busy corner for their location. They had run their own businesses for years, first a theater, then a barbecue(烤肉) restaurant, then another drive-in. But in their new operation, they offered a new, shortened menu: French fries, hamburgers, and sodas. To this small selection they added one new idea: quick service, no waiters or waitresses, and no tips.Their hamburgers sold for fifteen cents. Cheese was another four cents. Their French fries and hamburgers had a remarkable uniformity(一致性), for the brothers had developed a strict routine(程序) for the preparation of their food, and they insisted on their cooks sticking to their routine. Their new drive-in became surprisingly popular, particularly for lunch. People drove up by the hundreds during the busy noontime. The self-service restaurant was so popular that the brothers had allowed ten copies of their restaurant to be opened. They were content with this modest success until they met Ray Kroc.Kroc was a salesman who met the McDonald brothers in 1954, when he was selling milkshake-mixing machines. He quickly saw the special attraction of the brothers fast-food restaurants and bought the right to franchise(特許經營) other copies of their restaurants. The agreement included the right to duplicate(復制) the menu, the equipment, even their red and white buildings with the golden arches(拱門). Today McDonalds is really a household name. In 1976, McDonalds had over $ l billion in total sales. Its first twenty-two years is one of the most surprising success stories in modern American business history.1. (B) ABDB *結束CDo you know what really troubles me? For some reason, words with silent letters have always bothered me. For example, consider these words: know, design, island, school, wrist, naughty, and salmon. All of these words have at least one letter that is not typically pronounced, and these words are just a very small part of words with silent letters in them. Some words are even worse, consider this word: colonel. Not only are some letters not pronounced, but letters that are not even there are pronounced. Even foreign languages, especially French, are guilty of this needless complexity and confusion. I know there must be some main historical reasons why the words are spelled and pronounced the way they are, but that does not mean bad traditions must continue to survive. Especially if they are no longer logical. Unfortunately, there is very little that anyone can do for it, because theres no group of people who can change or have the right to change the English language for everyone. However, the only thing we can do is make changes in the way we talk and write in hopes that it catches on. For example, I pronounce the letter “l(fā)” in salmon on purpose to make people annoyed and to sound more different or complicated. I even pronounce colonel the correct or French way. I can only hope these two minor changes to the English language make sense to you, and you will help to keep up these minor changes forever in your everyday life.9. Which of the following is the main reason for silent letters? A. French language. B. Historical reasons. C. Some linguists D. Bad traditions.10. The underlined phrase “catches on” probably means “_”. A. becomes popular B. gets across C. follows the fashions D. doesnt fall behind11. Which of the following is the best title for this passage? A. Troubles in everyday life B. Traps in English words C. Words with silent letters D. Necessary changes of languages(C) BAC*結束
