Taking a bath provides
a variety
of
health
benefits, for
example,
keeping
your
body
clean
and relaxing,
but
if
we are ever ill
in
bed and cant
get up,
we will
be thankful
for the nurse who helps us get clean. While I am not a nurse, and have never given
anyone a bath, I would imagine that it would take a lot of sympathy and patience
to do so.
Yet those who attended the International Conference on Intelligence Robots and
Systems Conference last
month were introduced
to
Cody,
a robot
that
can
bathe
human
beings.
The robot
has a base that
can be turned
to all
di rections,
two human-like
arms, and
flexible wrists (
腕 ) . It uses a camera and laser range finder to locate parts of
the human body.It then uses bath gloves to clean with a little pressure.
The robot was designed at the Georgia Institute of Technology.Charles Kemp of the
Health Care Robotics Lab is the senior researcher for the project. In a test run,
Cody was able to remove 96% of a test subjects dirt
— not bad for a robot.
But dont
go asking
for
Cody for
Cody yet — hes
still
a model.Yet
researchers
believe
that
one day Cody may take
the
place
of
nurses
for
this
task.Researchers
claim
that
Cody will
afford patients
increased
private
information.I
suppose that would depend
on the patient.
Even so, I can appreciate the need.We dont have enough nurses to go around, and
those
places that
are the
most short-handed,
for
example,
nursing
homes, are
those
that have the most patients who
are unable to bathe themselves.Still, before I
get
there, I hope they think of a better way to solve the problem.

B. What Cody looks like and who designed it.
C. What Cody can do and where it will work soon.

.
A. Cody can bathe patients better than a real nurse
B. robots like Cody are being produced in large numbers
C. Cody can take the place of nurses completely in hospitals
D. researchers think Cody can protect patients personal information
14. There is a need for Cody because ________

When one person
gains
weight,
his close
friends
often
follow.Researchers
have just
offered
evidence
in
a study that says obesity(
肥胖 ) appears
to
spread
through
social
ties. But the findings might also offer hope.
If_friends_help_make_obesity_acceptable,_then_they_might_also_be_influential_in
_losing_the_fat.The researchers note that support groups are already an effective
tool in dealing with other socially influenced problems, like alcoholism(
酗酒 ) .
The findings appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine. The researchers used
information collected from 12
, 000 people.It was collected between 1972 and 2003
as part of the Framingham Heart Study.
The information was highly detailed. There was even contact information for close
friends of the people in the study.
The researchers examined more than 40
, 000 social ties.They found that a persons
chances of becoming severely overweight increased by 57% if a friend had become
obese.
A sister
or brother
of a person
who became obese had a 40%increased
chance of becoming
obese.The risk for
a wife
or husband was a little
less
than
that.Nicholas
Christakis
of Harvard
Medical
School
was a lead
researcher
in
the
study.He
says
there
is a direct
causal
relationship
between a person getting
fat
and
being followed
in
weight
gain
by a friend.
The study found that the sex of the friends was also an influence. In sam
e-sex
friendship, a person had a 71% increased risk of becoming obese.Men had a 44%
increased risk of becoming obese after weight
gain in a brother. In sisters, it was
67%.
The researchers
also
considered
the
effect of
where people
lived
in
relation
to
each
other.James
Fowler
of
the
University
of
California
was the
other
lead
expert.He
says
a friend who lives a few hundred kilometres away has as much influence as one in
the same neighbourhood. He says the study demonstrates the need to consider that a
major part of peoples health is tied to their social connections.
Both researchers
say their
research
shows that
obesity
is not
just
a private
medical
issue, but also a public health problem.
