Understanding the passage 1) Paragraph 1: Original source of the Nobel Prize Vocabulary: original source, estate If someone founded a prize, what is the most important matter? Read the 1st paragraph. What’s the original source of the Nobel Prize? Could you use your own words to explain what original source means? How much was the estate worth? So estate just refers to what he owned/ possessed. Was that a large sum of money? How large? Let’s count the o…s. And this money became the origin of the Nobel Prize. Paragraph 2: What fields to go to Vocabulary: will, outstanding Could you read the paragraph together and while reading, keep the two questions in your mind. Are you able to answer the two questions? What do the Nobel Prizes honor? Did Nobel tell his friends about it? He said in his will. Here is will a verb or a noun? Then what fields do the Nobel Prizes go to? Physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine and the most outstanding works in literature. Could you name some geniuses who were once awarded the Nobel Prize? They are all outstanding people. Could you think of some words which mean the same as outstanding? Are all the fields covered here? What is missing? The Nobel Prize for peace. Nobel was a chemist, a scientist. Why did he found the Nobel Prize for peace? Think of dynamite. What else is not included? the Nobel Prize for economics was added in 1968. Paragraph 3: Introduction of the ceremony Vocabulary: anniversary, award, honour Now, we are clear about the origin and the fields the Nobel Prizes go to. What else are you eager to know? Could you find out the key word of the third paragraph? __p3___________ gives an introduction of the ceremony. Para 3 is written in the form of a paragraph. Let’s make a table, then. Where is the award ceremony held? What is each winner awarded? In award ceremony, award is a noun while in what is each winner awarded, award is a v. What is followed? Who are the most important guests? Who else are also invited? Some lucky students are also invited to this grand occasion. Consolidation Now, we have gone through the whole passage. Simon was assigned to write a summary of the passage. What aspects does he need to mention? What Simon needs to do is to bine these aspects into a paragraph. Here is a summary written by Simon. Is the summary plete? Simon thought these words were too difficult for him. Only the Nobel Prize winners, the King and the Queen, and many well- known leaders in science and culture are guests of honour. IV Assignment Prepare a brief introduction to a genius Among all the great people, who do you admire the most? Try to find the material of one genius you admire the most and prepare a brief introduction. Hoy stood up to throw out the first ball of the World Series. Most people at Crowley Field on that day probably did not remember Hoy because he had retired from professional baseball 58 years earlier, in 1903. However, he had been an outstanding player and the deaf munity still talks about him and his years in baseball. William E. Hoy was born in Houckstown, Ohio, on May 23, 1862. He became deaf when he was two years old. He attended the Columbus Ohio School for the Deaf in 1872. After graduation eight years later, he started playing semi-professional baseball while working as a shoemaker. Hoy began playing professional baseball in 1886 for Oshkosh (Wisconsin) of the Northwestern League. In 1888, he started as an outfielder with the old Washington Senators. His small stature and speed made him an outstanding base runner. He was very good at stealing bases during his career. In the 1888 major league season, he stole 82 bases. He was also the Senators leading hitter in 1888. Hoy was ambidextrous; he threw right-handed and batted left-handed. On June 19, 1889, he threw out three batters at the plate from his outfield position. The arm signals used by umpires today to indicate balls and strikes began because of Hoy. The umpire lifted his right arm to indicate that the pitch was a strike, and his left arm to signal that it was a ball. For many years, people talked about Hoys last ball game in 1903. He was playing for Los Angeles of the Pacific Coast Winter League. It was a memorable game because Hoy made a spectacular play which won the game. It was a very foggy night and, therefore, very hard to see the ball. In the ninth inning, with two men out, Hoy managed to catch a fly ball to make the third out in spite of the fog. Los Angeles defeated their opposition. After he retired, Hoy stayed busy. He ran a dairy farm near Cincinnati for 20 years. He also became a public speaker and traveled giving speeches. Until a few years before his death, he took 4 to 10 mile walks several mornings a week. On December 15, 1961, William Hoy died at the age of 99.
