Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city? In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons—for example, economic (經(jīng)濟(jì)的) reasons—why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed? In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own hometown of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate (影響) its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area. It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt (破壞) the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative(保守的)and do not like change. Although we have to respect peoples feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move_things_forward. If we always reproduced what was there before,we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice. 1.What does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph? A.Some of them are not attractive. B.Most of them are too expensive to preserve. C.They are more pleasing than modern buildings. D.They have nothing to do with the historic feel of an area. 2.Which of the following is true according to the author? A.We should reproduce the same old buildings. B.Buildings should not dominate their surroundings. C.Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in. D.No one understands why people speak against new buildings. 3.By “move things forward ” in the last paragraph , the author probably means“________”. A.destroy old buildings B.put things in a different place C.choose new architectural styles D.respect peoples feelings for historical buildings 4.What is the main purpose of the passage? A.To explain why people dislike change. B.To warn that we could end up living in caves. C.To admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings. D.To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas. 根據(jù)第一段第三句“Not all historical buildings are attractive.” How to be a good tourist We travel for work but also for fun and learning. New restaurants, galleries, temples and new architecture...These places are homes for people like us who live and work there. How would you want visitors to behave in your own home? Think about it. __1__ There are many ways of doing this without sacrificing our own holiday. Do your homework.__2__ Guides will help you when you get to site, but is that the best place to go? Is it popular only because the oneday tourist can see it easily or because it is really a worthwhile place to visit? Youd better check it out. __3__ Dont go to your hotels for meals. Walk around, even if in the streets closest to your hotel. Eat in local restaurants. Talk to the locals. Learn a few in the local language and use them. You will surely get a smile from the hotel staff and street sellers. Help preserve the sites. Most of the sites you visit may be visited by millions of people a year, so care needs to be taken to allow others to enjoy them as well. Some of these monuments are so old and fragile that they are sensitive to the touch of hands or bags and shows. __4__ This way, you dont encourage the use of those plastic bags that fly all over many sites. And heres the big one—good manners are nearly universal. __5__ If that doesnt sound like you, then give the world a break and stay home. A.Experience the place. B.Always have a cloth bag with you. C.Read up on the places you want to visit. D.Try to buy something from the local stores. E.A good tourist is polite, positive and ecosensitive. F.Weve cleaned up after ourselves and taken only good memories. G.If we are good tourists, wherever we go, we try to make it a little better because of our visit. There are many ways of doing this... 2.C 根據(jù)下一句Guides will help you... 3.A 根據(jù)下文walk around,... 4.B 根據(jù)下一句This way, you... 5.E 根據(jù)上一句...good manners are nearly universal可知。 Ⅲ.語法填空 (xx山西省晉城市月考) Jane:Raul, this is the __1__ (bad) vacation that we have ever been on. First, we __2__ (miss) our flight and had to pay $200 for new tickets. Then, you forgot to make __3__ (reserve) at the hotel, and now we all are alone here on this stupid island because you had to go off swimming alone. Why couldnt you just stay close to the boat as you were __4__ (suppose) to? Raul:Honey, you know that sharks are my favorite animals. I couldnt just stay near the boat and look at stupid colorful fish __5__ I knew that there were sharks __6__(swim) around out there, just waiting to be found. Jane:Well, youve certainly done it now, __7__you? How are we supposed to get home now? What about the kids? We left them with your parents. God knows __8__ fat and spoiled they will get if we __9__(leave) them there. We have to get back home. Raul:Listen, its all going to be okay, honey. I have a plan. Once after class one classmate asked about him. “Why are you, so fat?” We both stopped to stare at him, wondering how Joe would answer the question. He just said at a calm voice. “Well, because my size must large enough to hold my large heart of love.” Heard his words, we burst into laughter. Our opinions are divided on this topic. Some students are for it. Having western holidays is a good and lovely way to understand western holidays and foreign cultures. By celebrating popular western holidays, we know more about the history of other countries and we get closer to the world. In addition, we have opportunities to get together and have fun with our friends. However, others are strongly against it. They think its a problem when many young people forget Chinese traditions. And its terrible to have little knowledge of our own culture. Furthermore, most of us dont know much about western holidays based on their religion and cultures. But just have fun and spend money and time in celebrating them. Thats stupid.- 1.
