Unit 5 Canada The True North*閱讀理解。Do you hear that birds of a feather flock together? It certainly appears that they do. We are likely to hang around with individuals who are similar to ourselves. Poor people like to surround themselves with other poor people, and rich people with other rich people. Intelligent people associate with like-minded people, and artists typically seek out other artists. It appears that we all have fort zones we attempt to stay within. Very stressed and poor people dont feel fortable associating with rich people. We owe it to each other to be successful because success breeds more success. And if we are not feeling successful, looking at who we have as friends and associates can tell us and others a lot about ourselves and why. The longer we associate with a group of individuals, the more our thinking processes bee like theirs.A few years ago, a doctor friend of mine began associating with a new group of people. At the time, he had a successful practice and a positive and grateful attitude to life. However, within the first six months of his association with these individuals, his attitude and goals changed , he was angry at how things were and was dissatisfied with those whod bee his opposition. He became very stubborn. As a result his practice dropped in quality of service. His facial expressions often showed anger and stress. After about two years of association with this group, he learned some valuable lessons. He realized that always focusing on problems or being dissatisfied with others doesnt lead to a rewarding life, nor does it solve as many problems as it creates. He decided that hed rather get back into serving his patients. This doctor put his heart and soul into his practice, and his life changed again. He began to attract people who focused on solutions instead of problems. His success was now more obvious than his stresshis achievement more obvious than his frustration.Whom we hang out with does make a difference. The old saying If you want to soar (翱翔) with the eagles, dont flock with the turkeys. has a point.1.What does the underlined part birds of a feather flock together in Paragraph 1 mean?A. Birds like to take a risk to fly high in the sky.B. Birds are more likely to fly together than other creatures.C. People are more likely to have different attitudes to life.D. People of the same kind are found together.2.We can infer from the passage that the individuals the doctor hung out with were _.A. stressedB. successfulC. patientD. rich3.The author uses the old saying in the last paragraph to _.A. show his great literary talentB. make his article more persuasiveC. raise another similar questionD. suggest the end of his article4.The author uses the doctors example to prove that _.A. bad luck never es aloneB. success breeds more successC. someone has no control over his own lifeD. people are likely to bee like those who they associate with【語(yǔ)篇解讀】俗話(huà)說(shuō):物以類(lèi)聚,人以群分,人們往往會(huì)和相處的人相似,所以我們要和積極的人在一起。 We are likely to hang around with individuals who are similar to ourselves.可知,birds of a feather flock together 指的是同樣的人會(huì)在一起。 Whom we hang out with does make a difference.我們和誰(shuí)在一起很重要,然后用諺語(yǔ)If you want to soar (翱翔) with the eagles, dont flock with the turkeys. The longer we associate with a group of individuals, the more our thinking processes bee like theirs. Once upon a time, there was a king in a big, rich country. English are “Life persists”I _1_ them years ago as a college student, sitting in the library,_2_,working on a paper.Out of nowhere, those words came _3_ off the page in a quote(引語(yǔ)):“In the midst of death life persists,in the midst of _4_ truth persists,in the midst of darkness light persists.”Suddenly I wasnt unhappy and impatient any more. Then I _5_ my granddad.I loved to talk with him.And I was _6_ to hear what hed think of it.He had poor hearing,so I had to _7_ it a few times, but once he _8_ it,he laughed.“All I can say to that is totally _9_,” he said on the phone.I told him how glad I was, after a long winter,to finally see spring and _10_ to find that quote.“Why is that?” he asked.“Well, spring is a sure _11_ that life persists. And it just makes me _12_.”He laughed again, and then _13_ his lovely voice,he recited for me his _14_“spring time” words:“The desert shall rejoice(高興),and _15_ as the rose does.even with joy and singing.”Many years later,_16_ my husband and I drove across a desert with many wildflowers and blooming(盛開(kāi)的)cactuses,I could _17_ hear my granddad laughing:“The desert shall rejoice.”Life persists, and so do we,in the silence of _18_ and the Dstrikes【解題導(dǎo)語(yǔ)】本文是一篇夾敘夾議的文章,講述的是作者有感于春天的活力,從偶然讀到的一段話(huà)聯(lián)想到生命的意義與堅(jiān)持。 pick out“挑選,辨別出”;make up“編造”。2A根據(jù)下文中的“Suddenly I wasnt unhappy and impatient any more”可知,作者當(dāng)時(shí)在圖書(shū)館里的心情是很煩悶的。 accusation“控告”;suspicion“懷疑”。 visit“看望,拜訪(fǎng)”;consult“咨詢(xún)”;inform“告知”。6D根據(jù)語(yǔ)境及上文中的“I loves to talk with him”可知,作者很想聽(tīng)到爺爺(對(duì)這句話(huà))是怎么看的。 patient“耐心的”;upset“不安的”。7C根據(jù)上文中的“He had poor hearing,so I had to”和下文中的“a few times”可知,爺爺?shù)穆?tīng)覺(jué)不靈,所以作者不得不多次重復(fù)(repeat)這句話(huà)。copy“抄寫(xiě)”;print“打印”;recite“背誦”。 make it“獲得成功,準(zhǔn)時(shí)到達(dá)”。 puzzlement“疑惑”;scepticism “懷疑”;agreement“贊同,同意”;disapproval“反對(duì),不贊成”。 practically“實(shí)際地,差不多”;obviously“明顯地”;naturally“自然而然地”。 astonished“震驚的”;energetic“精力充沛的”。 impressive“給人印象深刻的”;superb“極佳的,質(zhì)量極高的”;classical“經(jīng)典的”;favorite“最喜歡的”。 根據(jù)空后的“as the rose does”可知,flower“開(kāi)花”符合語(yǔ)境。 18D根據(jù)空后的“the blooming of cactuses.”和上文中的“a desert with many wildflowers and blooming(盛開(kāi)的)cactuses”及“The desert shall rejoice”可知,生命長(zhǎng)存,同樣的,我們也要堅(jiān)持。 19Ain the dead of winter“在隆冬,在嚴(yán)冬”?? convince“使相信”;assure“使確信”;remind“提醒”;strike“突然想到”。 Living without an aim is like sailing without pass. If there is no aim in our lives, we will get lose. Last term, I couldnt accept the truth which I failed in my math examination. I decided to give it up, so I skipped from classes frequently. Considered my case, my teacher offered me several detailed approach and advised me to set a shortterm goal to improve my math. Finally, I work harder than ever and made great progress in her math. In my opinion, success lies in a series of goals. However, we should remember to make our targets clearly and spare no effort to realize our dreams.答案:Living without an aim is like sailing without pass. If there is no aim in our lives, we will get . Last term, I couldnt accept the truth I failed in my math examination. Finally, I harder than ever and made great progress in math. In my opinion, success lies in a series of goals. , we should remember to make our targets and spare no effort to realize our dreams. *
