considering underground space to meet residential, commercial, transportation, industrial and municipal needs of their cities. Besides saving land resources, the benefits offered by underground structures include safety against earthquakes and hurricanes, and freedom from urban noise. However, owing to their unique design and construction, they call for rigorous structural health monitoring (SHM) programmes during construction and operation, especially when important structures are located nearby on the ground surface. Their continuous monitoring can serve to mitigate potential hazards, ensure better performance and facilitate in-depth understanding of the overall structural behaviour. This paper addresses major technological issues and challenges associated with structural monitoring of underground structures. A detailed review of the available sensor technologies and methods for comprehensive monitoring is presented, with special emphasis on conditions encountered underground. Practical benefits arising out of such monitoring are also highlighted, with the help of several real-life case studies involving underground structures. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Pursuant to the Decision-in-Principle of 2001 Posiva has moved to the phase of underground characterisation of the repository site. The main objective of this phase is to confirm the suitability of the Olkiluoto site by investigations conducted underground. A programme of monitoring has been launched as part of the investigations and to follow the changes occurring within the site due to the construction. The programme of monitoring started in the year 2004, one year before the construction work. Baseline monitoring was carried out prior to the construction phase and the results gained from monitoring during construction phase are compared to the baseline data. The research activities of the URL are dedicated to study the feasibility of reversible, deep geological disposal of high-activity, long-lived radioactive wastes in an argillaceous host rock. The Laboratory consists of two shafts, an experimental drift at 445 m depth and a set of technical and experimental drifts at the main level at 490 rn depth. The main objective of the research is to characterize the confining properties of the argillaceous rock through in situ hydrogeological tests, chemical measurements and diffusion experiments. In order to achieve this goal, a fundamental understanding of the geoscientific properties and processes that govern geological isolation in clay-rich rocks has been acquired. This understanding includes both the host rocks at the laboratory site and the regional geological context.After establishing the geological conditions, the underground research programme had to demonstrate that the construction and operation of a geological disposal will not introduce pathways for waste migration. Thus, the construction of the laboratory itself serves a research purpose through the monitoring of excavation effects and the optimization of construction technology. These studies are primarily geomechanical in nature, though chemical and hydrogeological coupling also have important roles.In order to achieve the scientific objectives of this project in the underground drifts, a specific methodology has been applied for carrying out the experimental programme conducted concurrently with the construction of the shafts and drifts.This methodology includes technological as well as organizational aspects and a systematic use of feedback from other laboratories abroad and every scientific zone of the URL already installed.This methodology was first applied to set up a multi-purpose experimental area at 445 m depth. Then the setting up of the experimental programme at the level 490 m was improved from the knowledge acquired during installation of the drift at 445 m.The several steps of the underground scientific programme are illustrated by presenting three experiments carried out in the underground drifts. The first experiment was carried out from the drift at 445 m depth, from end of 2004 to mid 2005. This experiment aimed at setting up an array of about 16 boreholes to monitor the geomechanical changes during and after construction of the shaft between 445 and 490 m.The second experiment was set up in the drift at 445 rn depth, and also at the main level at 490 m depth. It consisted in determining the composition of the interstitial water by circulating gas in one borehole and water of a known composition in the other. The evolution of the composition of both water and gases enabled us to test the thermodynamic model of the water/rock interactions.The third example is related to the testing of a concept of interruption of the EDZ through a cross-cut slot technology. The concept, which was tested successfully at Mont Terri (Switzerland), has been transposed and adapted to the URL site conditions. Most transportation systems, energy and water supplies, shopping facilities and other daily necessities require underground spaces. However, underground construction in soft ground is demanding and must be carefully undertaken with great attention to temporary works design. Additionally, in areas with a high water table, watertight construction is a primary requirement in the whole-life maintenance strategy. This paper deals with key aspects in tackling such problems. Several recent construction projects in Shanghai are used to illustrate practical solutions to these problems. In dealing with long-span underground spaces, the use of reinforced concrete is compared with a composite construction. The design procedure for supporting deep excavations is based on constructing cut-and-cover structures. Early-age cracking in underground structures is prevented by simulation-based design and on-site monitoring. This paper also provides an example of sustainable development for infrastructure through planned maintenance, and inspection and appraisal techniques for existing infrastructure. Several homes were identified in the Phoenix, AZ metropolitan area with soil radium concentrations of < 0.074 Bq g-1 (2.0 pCi g-1) which had elevated radon concentrations unexplained by geological sources alone. Continuous monitoring of eight houses under different conditions of cooling system usage revealed a definite role of the underground air returns as active transport pathways contributing to the enhancement of the indoor concentration of 222Rn in six of the houses.
