What is it? Graffiti (涂鴉), of course. Look around cities in the UK today and you can see graffiti on buildings, walls, doors and even on buses or trains that have stayed in one place for too long. But where modern technology creates a problem, it also finds a way to deal with it. Last week, The Weekend West was shown around the factory of a small but successful company (公司), Hubdean. Hubdean’s achievement is some special paints which are graffiti-resistant. How do they work? It couldn’t be simpler. Take any graffiti-covered surface. First, a treatment called Agproclear is used. Then, using a very hot pressure jet (壓力噴嘴), this treatment is taken away and the graffiti disappears at the same time. Now you have a clean wall. But before this clean wall can be painted on by graffiti lovers, a new product, Agproshield, is used. This paint has a special surface which gives it two important advantages. Firstly, spray paint (噴霧顏料) won’t stick to the surface very well, and secondly, the whole surface can be cleaned very easily, just using water. Once the surface is painted, no specialist equipment (設(shè)備) is needed to keep the area clean and graffiti-free. Not surprisingly, Hubdean’s products are used by both local governments and private companies all over the UK, and now orders are being received from around the world. This brings the company a problem, however. Can they increase production to satisfy the needs? Of course, they can build a second factory or work with a large international company to make their products. The future is looking good for Hubdean! 31 . What does the underlined word “graffiti-resistant” in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Painting graffiti. B.Keeping graffiti. C.Preventing graffiti. D.Changing graffiti. 32 . When should Agproshield be used? A.Before Agproclear is used. B.When the wall is still clean. C.When Agproclear doesn’t work. D.After graffiti is painted on the wall. 33 . What can we learn about Hubdean? A.There is a good market for its products. B.A large company is going to buy its products. C.It is developing more new and better products. D.Most of its business comes from private companies. 34 . What would be the best title for the text? A.Is Hubdean successful? B.Is graffiti art? Of course not! C.Hubdean a high-tech company? D.Graffiti a problem? Just wash it off! Thinking outside the Box If you think young people cant have an influence on the world, think again. Over the years, teens have invented excellent things that solve problems and have changed the ways people do things. Take fourteen-year-old Eliott Sarrey for example. He invented Bot2Karot,a gardening robot that can take care of a small vegetable garden. The robot is controlled by an app on a smartphone. It helps people grow and take care of vegetables. It also saves water and energy, and makes gardening easy for people who are very busy or have difficulty getting around. Brooke Martin is an animal lover who missed her dog when she was away. So she invented iCPooch when she was just twelve years old. The iCPooch lets pet owners check on their pets from anywhere in the world using a smartphone. It also allows owners to use their smartphone cameras to video chat with their pets. Fourteen-year-old inventor Robert Saunt was tired of buying or borrowing different video-game controllers for each game console(操控器 ) . So he invented a controller called Game Blox. It can be used with four of the most popular game consoles. His invention will save players a lot of money and space, and it will save 330 million kg of materials every year. Kids all over the world find ways to solve problems every day. Who knows?Maybe the next time you have a problem, youll come up with the next amazing idea! 35 . Now the insect could become mans new best friend. It sounds like something from a movie, but a team of scientists are making a success of live remote-controlled(遠(yuǎn)程控制的)cockroaches.(A)They can be used to gather information from places no humans could reach. After years of hard work, Texas engineers have created an insect cyborg(半機(jī)械人)by using a live cockroach which carries a mini-computer. The computer is wired into a nervous system, meaning a human operator can push buttons to(B)_________ where it goes. Hong Liang, research project leader at Texas A&M University, said the cyborg insect could carry tiny video cameras, microphones or other equipment to record information from small pipes, or even collapsed(倒塌的)buildings to find earthquake survivors(幸存者). He said,"Insects can do things that a robot cant. They can go into small places, sense the environment, and if theres movement, from predator say, they can escape much better than a system designed by a human." "We wanted to find ways to work with cockroaches." They are usually classed as vermin(害蟲)and a restaurant owners worst nightmare(噩夢). (C)However, by working with the insects for long, Mr. Liang soon became fond of them, feeding them dog food and water. The experiment has not been well-received across all quarters of the science community(團(tuán)體).The insects can carry five times their weight, but do feel tired with the extra burden(負(fù)擔(dān)). 55 . 判斷下面句子的正(A)誤(B)。 A team of scientists can use a live cockroach to gather information from small pipes. 56 . 完成(A)處的同義句。 They can be used __________________ information from places no humans could reach. 57 . 在(B)處填入一個恰當(dāng)?shù)膯卧~,使句子通順。_________ 58 . 把(C)處劃線句子翻譯成漢語。 ____________________________________________________________________________ 59 .
