第一節(jié)(共15小題;每小題2分,滿分30分)
閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。
A
I arrived in the classroom, ready to share my knowledge and experience with 76 students who would be my English literature class.Having taught in the US for 17 years,I have no doubt about my ability to hold their attention and to impress on them my admiration for the literature of my mother tongue.
I was shocked when the monitor shouted,“stand up!”The entire class rose as I entered the room and I was somewhat confused about how to get them to sit down again, but once the embarrassment was over,I quickly regained my calmness and admiration.I went back to my office with the rosy glow which came from a strong sense of achievement.
My students kept diaries. However,as I read them, the rosy glow was gradually replaced by a strong sense of sadness. The first diary said,“Our literature teacher didn’t teach us anything today.Perhaps her next lecture will be better.”Greatly surprised,I read diary after diary, each expressing a similar theme.“Didn’t I teach them anything?I described the entire Western philosophy (哲學(xué)) and laid the historical background for all the works we will study in class,”I complained.“How should they say I didn’t teach them anything?”
It was a long term, and it gradually became clear that my ideas about education were not the same as those of my students.I thought a teacher’s job was to raise interesting questions and provide enough background so that students could draw their own conclusions. My students thought a teacher’s job was to provide exact information as directly and clearly as possible. What a difference!
However,I also learned a lot,and the experience with my Chinese students has made me a better American teacher, knowing how to teach in a different culture.

A.cultural differences
B.her own embarrassment

If there is no difference in general intelligence (智力) between boys and girls, what can explain girls’ poor performance in science and mathematics?
It seems that their treatment at school is a direct cause.Mathematics and science are seen as subjects mainly for boys, and therefore,as girls become teenagers, they are less likely to take them.Interestingly, both boys and girls often regard the subjects for boys as more difficult.Yet it has been suggested that girls do not take mathematics courses, not because they are difficult, but for social reasons.Girls do not want to be in open competition with boys because they are afraid to appear less feminine (女性的) and attractive.
However,if we examine the performance of boys and girls who have taken mathematics courses, there are still more high-achieving boys than there are girls. This difference appears to be worldwide.Biological explanations have been offered for this, but there are other explanations, too.
Perhaps the difference which comes out during the teenage years has its roots in much earlier experiences. From their first days in kindergarten, boys are encouraged to work on their own and to complete tasks.Facts show that outstanding (杰出的) mathematicians and scientists have not had teachers who supplied answers.
Besides, there can be little doubt that teachers of mathematics and science expect their boy students to do better at these subjects than their girl students. They even appear to encourage the difference between boys and girls. They spend more time with the boy students, giving them more time to answer questions and working harder to get correct answers from them. They are more likely to call on boys for answers and to allow them to take the lead in classroom discussion. They also praise boys more frequently. All of these seem to encourage boys to work harder in science and mathematics and to give them confidence (信心) that they are able to succeed.
Such a way of teaching is not likely to encourage girls to take many mathematics and science courses, nor is it likely to support girls who do.When it comes to these subjects it seems certain that school widens the difference between boys and girls.

If you think English means endless new words, difficult grammars and sometimes strange pronunciations, you are wrong.Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power.Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language.
A team led by Dr.Andrea Mecheli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five,as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.
“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,”said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills.“Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (靈活的),”he said,“You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better.“Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.
68.The main subject talked about in this passage is ________.
A.science on learning a second language
B.man’s ability of learning a second language
C.language study can help improve brain power
D.language learning and maths study
69.In the second paragraph, the writer mentions “exercise” in order to ________.

B.prove that one needs more practice when he (she) is learning a language
C.show the importance of using the language when you learn it
D.make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well

How to Make Friends
71.____. Indeed, there are many things in life which we alone cannot perform.
We need friends’ help. Friends are people who willingly and readily help us when we are in trouble and show sympathy for us when we are in misery.
72.____.For example, when we have passed the graduation examination and are looking for a job, we need experienced and reliable friends to guide us and help us on our way. A good friend is also an adviser because our own points of view towards things may not be always right.73.____.
Of course, we can make friends everywhere. However, I think the best place is school, where we are among a big number of boys and girls of our own age, so it is easy to get to know one another in a short time.74.____.
In order to make friends, we ourselves must be honest, noble-minded and kind-hearted whereby to leave a favorable impression on others since other people observe us the same way as we do.
At the same time, we should avoid bad friends, because they always do harm to us and moreover, they are dangerous to the people around. What is even worse, they destroy our friendship with good friends.75.____.
A. Indeed, seeking acquaintance with bad friends would be a serious mistake
B. A faithful friend is hard to find
C. Therefore, it is necessary for us to seek advice from friends
D. A friend in need is a friend indeed
E. Besides, we can also make friends among the people who work with us in the community
