Training may be for the purpose of panionship, detection, protection, entertainment or all of the above. An animal trainer may use various forms of reinforcement (強(qiáng)化) or punishment to condition an animals responses. Some animal trainers may have a knowledge of the principles of behavior analysis and operant conditioning (操作型條件), but there are many ways to train animals and as a general rule no legal requirements or certifications are required. Training chickens has bee a way for trainers of other animals (primarily dogs) to perfect their training technique. Bob Bailey, former director of Animal Behavior Enterprises and the IQ Zoo, teaches in chicken training courses where trainers teach chickens to tell different shapes, to navigate an obstacle course and to chain behaviors together. Chicken training is done using operant conditioning, using a clicker and chicken feed for reinforcement. Fish can also be trained. For example, a goldfish may swim toward its owner and follow him as he walks through the room, but will not follow anyone else. The fish may swim up and down, signaling the owner to turn on its aquarium (魚缸) light when it is off, and it will skim the surface until its owner feeds it. Pet goldfish have also been taught to perform more plicated tasks, such as doing the limbo (a kind of dance) and pushing a miniature soccer ball into a net. 續(xù)表 Among all animals, they are the third cleverest—monkeys, dolphins and pigs. But for one couple this unlikely start to their relationship has seen love blossom as they work to return a group of lion cubs to the wild. Michelle Looij and Ben Nieuwenhuls, both 23, have managed to bine their love of lions with that for each other and, after meeting nine months ago, are now engaged. The couple met at Ukutula Lion Park and Lodge in South Africas North West Province, and they are spending their days guiding lions through the thick South African bush. The pair specializes in caring for the rare white lions and are deeply devoted to the conservation of their deadly, but greatly attractive, charges (被照顧的人或事物).“Ben acts like their leader and rules them slightly,” said Michelle.“They look to him and he is so good at ordering how the play they engage in develops. Of course there is danger as they never lose their instinct and I must admit that sometimes when one of them jumps up in the water I get slightly frightened. I dont think Ben does.” “We wake early to feed the lions their morning feed of chickens,” said Ben, a South African national.“It is important to reintroduce ourselves to them in the morning through a bit of plight (困境) play. After they have eaten they are taken on a morning walk around 9 a.m. during which we stop to climb trees and to play around in the water. This is important to enrich their lives and to plan for the possibility that one day they will be reintroduced back into the wild.” The cubs are so used to the couple they can play and rest with them, but they are always cautious about the dangers. Wayne Meisel, director of the Campus Outreach Opportunity League of Minnesota University, said that under economic pressure American young people have to work hard and most students have to take parttime work in order to support themselves. In these circumstances, he said, young people lack confidence, which was not the case in the 1960s when young people thought themselves capable of doing anything. In spite of the different conditions in China, Li Xuequan, director of the higher education section of the AllChina Youth Federation, said Chinese young people are also facing economic pressure and are worried about inflation (通貨膨脹) and corruption(腐敗). In order to solve these problems, the Chinese and American experts agreed that youth organization should call on the whole of society to create favourable conditions for the healthy growth of young people, as well as to encourage them to meet the urgent needs of society. Meisel said that since last year he has sent letters of “challenge to youth” to many young people, urging them to mit themselves to meeting such needs as feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, caring for the lonely and sick, serving the elderly and preserving the environment. The letter says:“Through the service, we touch the lives of others and enrich our own.” 44.What is the main factor that leads to young peoples lack of confidence in both countries? A.Their education. But his administration also wants stronger rules for colleges that operate for profit. Career colleges receive billions of dollars from taxpayers through student loans. The Education Department says some of that goes to waste and leaves students in debt for educations of little or no value. To receive federal aid, career colleges must prepare students for what the law calls “gainful employment” in a recognized occupation. Two tests are proposed to see if they do. One would measure the relationship between debt loads and how much students earn after they plete a program. The other would measure the rate at which all students repay their loans, whether they plete the program or not. Programs that fail these tests could be restricted or blocked from federal student aid. The Education Department says forprofit colleges and training programs are important. In xx they had close to two million students—nearly three times more than in xx. Last year, the five largest received more than threefourths of their money from federal student aid. And that amount did not include other forms of government aid. Yet officials say forprofit colleges may be less supervised than other schools. They also point to reports of highly aggressive marketing. For every 100 graduates of forprofit colleges, 18 fail to repay their federal student loans. That pares to five graduates of public colleges and universities. The department is now collecting public ments on a number of negotiated rules. Some would require career colleges to release their graduation and job placement rates. The goal is to publish a final rule by November. The Career College Association called the debttoearnings proposal unwise, unnecessary, unproven—and unlawful. The group says it has found that students in higher priced programs are more likely, not less likely, to repay their students loans. It says the move could eliminate programs serving 3000 students. Female and minority students would face the most harm,it says, as they are more likely to attend career colleges. The association also points to shrinking budgets for munity colleges. Its president, Harris Miller, says, “Students need more information, not fewer choices.” 48.The Education Department of America________. A. argues that federal student aid programs run quite well B. calls for more attention to federal student aid programs C. says forprofit colleges should be shut down or transformed gradually D. plans to present a system to test whether career colleges function properly 49.It can be inferred that________. E Theres always been tension (矛盾)—throughout our history—a kind of tension between private development and government control, especially when it es to the development of land for agriculture. Catherine Parr Traill—an expert in the nineteenth century—said that the natural beauty of Canadas wilderness would disappear because of agricultural development. But, fortunately for us, what Catherine Parr Traill had said turned out to be not entirely true. The Quinte Wildflower Project proves that people can e together to keep the beauty of the wilderness. The project continues a trend to beautify North American highways that goes all the way back to the 1960s and the beginning of the AdoptaHighway programs, the programs that use volunteers to clean up the litter along roadsides. Since the sixties, beautification programs have been broadened to include the planting of native flowers and shrubs (灌木). The Quinte Wildflower Project is the largest roadside planting of wildflowers in Ontario. The project was born in 1996, with the help of private sponsors and government gardening experts. Areas along an 18kilometer stretch of Highway 401—from Trenton to Belleville—most of the sites were planted with one or two native wildflower seed mixture. Both seed mixtures produce flowers that require little care and are hardy enough to grow in roadside conditions. Each seed mixture contains several different species, and wildflowers grow well, so theres a steady show of colors from June to October. The Quinte Wildflower Project has been a huge success. Its greatest success has been in attracting both public interest and private sponsors. It shows that government and citizens can work together and that their joint efforts can and do work. 52.The writer develops the topic of roadside beautification________. A.by paring two different aspects of the project B.by expressing disagreement about roadside beautification C.by discussing an example of a beautification project D.by describing recent research in flower planting 53.Why does the writer mention the AdoptaHighway programs that began in the 1960s? As technology develops, nowadays cell phones can do much more than that. They have bee allinone cell phones. A typical example is Apples phone.
